Oddities
A group show organized by Romeo Lee held on February 10 - March 11 at Gravity Art Space
A group of friends showcased their exhibition in Gravity Art Space and entitled it Oddities. Bonded over the woes and wins of fellow visual artists and painters, they have a space for themselves to express what it’s like to be different from the rest. Challenging the conventional norms of the system, this group show presents the possibility of embracing complexity.
With Marcus Aragon’s pieces entitled Hindi Tayo Bati Series, it delves into the topic of unconventional themes. Rather than giving emphasis on the tropes of friendship and love, Aragon chooses to portray what it’s like to have childish drama. Furthermore, instead of the “normal” reaction to such a statement, which is to simply have a tantrum, the child depicted in the painting is more aggressive and will resort to more violent means to get his point across.
Not only do they explore unusual themes, but they also manipulated materials to arrive at a similar destination. Instead of using a brush to paint, Vien Valencia chooses to use these brushes to make installation art. Rather than using it the “normal” way, the brushes are used as art personified. Within those brushes, there’s a story too, as these brushes came from a community art project by children in Marikina.
Truly, with an imagination such as theirs, nothing is impossible.
